Arturia MIDI Controllers NA-56 Editorial Review
The Arturia KeyLab MkII 61-Key Black is a well-crafted MIDI controller that boasts a robust metal build and an aesthetically pleasing design. With its extensive connectivity options and features, this controller is tailored for musicians looking for flexibility in their studio setup. Users appreciate the wide range of controls available, including multiple modes for pads and central controls, as well as RGB backlighting that enhances its visual appeal without being overdone. Notably, the semi-weighted keybed has garnered praise for its feel and responsiveness, adding to the overall playing experience. However, the user experience can vary significantly depending on the digital audio workstation (DAW) employed. While the KeyLab integrates seamlessly with software like Ableton Live and Arturia’s own synths, Cubase users have reported some challenges. Many find that the out-of-the-box experience is not as smooth or intuitive due to the need for deeper MIDI mapping and configuration, which can be daunting for beginners. The lack of adequate presets and instructional resources for Cubase users has left some feeling unsupported, particularly given ongoing requests for better integration from the manufacturer. This could potentially hinder the initial enthusiasm surrounding this otherwise impressive piece of kit. Despite the learning curve associated with configuration, seasoned users believe that mastering MIDI mapping skills can be beneficial. For those not solely focused on Native Instruments software or in need of built-in sequencing, the KeyLab MkII remains a highly recommended choice for its superior build quality and range of features. **
