Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is 600 grit aluminium oxide used for?
Answer: 600 grit aluminium oxide is primarily used for fine polishing and smoothing surfaces in various materials, including metals, stones, and ceramics. Its fine texture helps achieve a polished finish, making it ideal for applications like jewelry making, stone tumbling, and automotive refinishing. By using this grit, users can effectively eliminate scratches and impurities, resulting in a high-quality, glossy surface that enhances the aesthetic appeal of the item being polished. -
Question:
How do I use this tumbling abrasive grit?
Answer: To use 600 grit aluminium oxide in a rotary tumbler, first, combine it with the rocks or materials you wish to polish and add water as per your tumbler's instructions. Ensure the tumbler is properly sealed. As the tumbler rotates, the grit will come into contact with the surface of the rocks, gradually smoothing and polishing them as abrasion occurs. Allow it to run for the recommended time, then rinse and inspect the results for the desired finish. -
Question:
Can this abrasive grit be reused?
Answer: Yes, 600 grit aluminium oxide can be reused, but its effectiveness diminishes with each use due to wear and contamination with particles from the rocks. If you choose to reuse it, make sure to thoroughly clean it before using it again to avoid transferring impurities to your next batch of materials. It's often best suited for sequential stages of tumbling, allowing for a more refined finish over multiple uses with different grits. -
Question:
Is aluminium oxide safe to use?
Answer: Aluminium oxide is generally considered safe when handled properly. However, like any fine dust, it's important to use it in a well-ventilated area and wear a dust mask to avoid inhalation. Always follow safety recommendations on packaging and handle the material with care to minimize dust exposure, ensuring a safer working environment while getting optimal results in your tumbling projects. -
Question:
What types of rocks can be used with this grit?
Answer: This 600 grit aluminium oxide is suitable for tumbling a variety of rocks including agate, jasper, quartz, and other semi-precious stones. It's also effective on softer stones and ceramics, allowing you to achieve a polished look on your desired materials. Ensure that the rocks you use are appropriate for tumbling, as some softer stones may wear away too quickly or not hold a polish well. -
Question:
How long should I tumble with this grit?
Answer: Tumbling time can vary based on the type of material and desired finish. Generally, using 600 grit, you should tumble for about 3 to 7 days, depending on the specific stones and your polishing goals. It's advisable to check the progress periodically; if the rocks are approaching the desired smoothness or shine, you can stop the process to prevent over-polishing. -
Question:
What machine can I use with this metal abrasive grit?
Answer: This 600 grit aluminium oxide is designed for use in rotary and vibratory tumblers. Rotary tumblers are suited for larger batches, while vibratory tumblers can provide a faster polishing result. Depending on your preference and project size, either machine can effectively work with this abrasive grit to achieve smooth, polished surfaces on rocks and materials. -
Question:
Will this abrasive grit affect the color of my rocks?
Answer: Typically, 600 grit aluminium oxide should not alter the color of your rocks if used appropriately. The grit is primarily designed for polishing without significant material removal. However, certain softer or porous stones may require caution, as they could absorb residue or change appearance based on their composition. Always test on a small sample if you are unsure about color retention. -
Question:
