It comes without slides so it would be necessary to purchase a set of prepared slides. The maximum magnification is 100x and can easily see bacteria with the oil immersion feature. The price is a fraction of what professional scopes cost but operates in the same way. One reviewer had trouble with a dirty inside lens of the third ocular but was able to see yeast and bacteria with great clarity.
