Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is DeckWise Ipe Seal Hardwood End Grain Sealant used for?
Answer: DeckWise Ipe Seal is specifically designed to protect fresh cut ends of hardwood materials, particularly Ipe and other dense tropical woods. It effectively seals and prevents moisture intrusion, which can lead to splitting and cracking over time. This sealant is particularly beneficial for newly cut boards or turning blanks as it helps maintain the integrity of the material, allowing artisans and woodworkers to achieve high-quality finishes. Use this sealant when working on outdoor furniture, decking, or any project where wood exposure to moisture is a concern. -
Question:
How do I apply the DeckWise Ipe Seal Hardwood End Grain Sealant?
Answer: Application of DeckWise Ipe Seal is straightforward. Start by ensuring that the wood surface is clean and dry. Use a brush, roller, or sponge to apply a generous coat of the sealant to the freshly cut ends. For optimal results, let the sealant soak in for at least 10-15 minutes before wiping off any excess. This ensures that the product penetrates effectively into the wood fibers, maximizing protection. Ideal use cases include sealing the ends of decking boards or turning blanks before finishing. -
Question:
Is DeckWise Ipe Seal waterproof?
Answer: Yes, DeckWise Ipe Seal provides excellent waterproofing capabilities for hardwood end grain. Once applied, it forms a barrier that effectively repels water, thereby minimizing the risk of rot and decay caused by moisture. This feature is crucial for outdoor applications where wood is constantly exposed to moisture. For instance, when crafting outdoor furniture or deck installations, this sealant significantly enhances the longevity and durability of the wood, making it a preferred choice among woodworkers. -
Question:
Can I use DeckWise Ipe Seal on softer woods?
Answer: While DeckWise Ipe Seal is primarily formulated for dense hardwoods like Ipe, it can also be used on softer woods, although the results may vary. Softer woods might absorb the sealant differently, potentially requiring more frequent applications to achieve the desired protection. It is recommended to test on a small area first to ensure compatibility. Woodworkers often use it on both hardwood and softwood projects that may experience exposure to moisture, enhancing overall durability. -
Question:
How long does DeckWise Ipe Seal last?
Answer: The longevity of DeckWise Ipe Seal largely depends on the environment and the amount of wear and tear the wood is subjected to. On average, it can provide effective protection for several months before reapplication is necessary. Regular maintenance is essential, especially in high-moisture areas. For instance, if you have outdoor projects or items exposed to rain and humidity, you should check for any signs of wear and plan to reapply as needed to maintain optimal integrity and protection. -
Question:
Is DeckWise Ipe Seal eco-friendly?
Answer: DeckWise Ipe Seal is formulated with a focus on minimizing environmental impact. It is made with quality ingredients that are less harmful to the environment compared to traditional sealants. This makes it a more responsible choice for eco-conscious woodworkers and builders. When using it for furniture or outdoor projects, you’re contributing to sustainable practices while still achieving superior results in wood preservation. -
Question:
What is the ideal consistency and texture of the sealant?
Answer: DeckWise Ipe Seal has a thick, viscous consistency that allows for easy application while providing deep penetration into the wood. It is designed to stay where applied without excessive dripping, making it ideal for vertical surfaces. This texture ensures that the sealant not only coats the surface but also seeps into the porous end grain, offering comprehensive protection. When applying, you’ll notice how well it adheres, creating a protective barrier against moisture. -
Question:
Can I paint or stain over DeckWise Ipe Seal?
Answer: It's advised to allow DeckWise Ipe Seal to fully cure before attempting to paint or stain over it. This sealant acts as a barrier, and applying pigments too soon can affect adhesion and finish quality. If your project involves adding decorative finishes, ensure that the sealant is adequately cured to ensure a smooth, even application of paints or stains. This is particularly relevant for woodworkers looking to enhance the aesthetics of their furniture or other wooden projects. -
Question:
What type of cleanup is needed after using DeckWise Ipe Seal?
Answer: After using DeckWise Ipe Seal, it is important to clean your tools and any spills while the sealant is still wet. Use mineral spirits or a similar solvent to effectively remove any residue from brushes or applicators. Prompt cleanup helps maintain the quality of your equipment and prevents hardening of the product. This is crucial when you are performing multiple projects, as it ensures that tools are ready for future use without contamination. -

DeckWise Stains Editorial Review
The DeckWise Ipe Seal Hardwood End Grain Sealant is a specially designed product for sealing the ends of dense tropical hardwoods such as Ipe, Tigerwood and Paduk. The product is not meant for softwoods like Cedar or composite deck boards. It is recommended to allow the wood to dry out first before applying the sealer. The sealer should be applied just prior to staining/finishing. The product goes on easily and goes a long way. The application of the product is easy and the product gets absorbed quickly. It turns from a milky liquid to a semi-opaque waxy finish after absorption. The product is purely a waxy sealer to keep your end cuts from drying out and cracking. It’s not meant for surfaces that will see foot traffic (waxy = slippery). The clean-up process is super easy, just use warm water and soap to clean all the tools. This product comes in 1 quart, which is more than enough to put a generous coat on all fresh cuts. An expensive small brush is just fine for application of the wax. The product is great however it is quite expensive Considering the quantity.
